Sedimentation Chamber
Activaero’s Sedimentation Chamber is a unique particle measurement system that determines aerodynamic diameter of polydisperse aerosols via sedimentation. Sedimentation and impaction are important mechanisms for the application of aerosols in the lungs and the Sedimentation Chamber allows for detailed analysis of the aerosol mass diameter within minutes. This technology is appropriate for research applications in the development of inhaled pharmaceuticals.

Using sedimentation, particle size analysis allows for the measurement of the aerodynamic equivalent diameter of polydisperse aerosols. Such analysis is of tangible use in the design of inhaled medication and the principle has been established since 1975 (Stahlhofen, W., Armbruster, L., Gebhart, J. and Grein, E.: Particle sizing of aerosols by single particle observation in a sedimentation cell. Atmos. Environ. 9, S. 851-857).
However, until recently the measurement of particle size by sedimentation has not been employed as a standard, since it requires intensive data processing that was not previously available. Activaero’s Sedimentation Chamber uses modern data acquisition making it now possible to introduce a particle size measurement system for polydisperse aerosols. In this way, analysis can be completed simply and effectively in a matter of minutes (see Fig. 1).
